At a glance

patient document release was a roadmap item in which I delivered an end-to-end solution that focused on simplifying the user flow by designing multiple features focusing on releasing documents automatically GM’s EHR system

Timeline

Problem
Patient documents were manually released to patients and referring providers/programs which was a labor-intensive process for Genome Medical’s Clinical Team along with potential HIPAA risks if the patient documents are accidentally sent to the incorrect patients. Patients on the other hand had difficulty accessing their clinical documents due to the manual request and delivery process.

My Role

I was the main designer for this project working directly with the PM along with the senior front-end and backend engineers. I focused on simplifying the user flow of the document release experience by designing multiple features focusing on releasing documents through our EHR system, enhancing the clinical team user experience working with documents, and re-designing the patient-facing experience so patients can view their documents on their accounts.

Project Outcome

As of now, the project went live with the first MVP of GM’s EHR automatic document release which included error-proofing features to reduce HIPPA risks. The enhanced patient portal document list also went live. Finally, I provided a revamped high-fidelity design to enhance the clinical team experience when working under the documents tab. Due to the limited scope of this project, these suggestions will be applied in future roadmap items.

My takeaways

Effective Communication

Projects can get messy and scope can get redefined which can be overwhelming. Nonetheless, effectively communicating with main stakeholders is key to align expectations, conquer limitations and meet deadlines. My advice is to put yourself in the stakeholder’s shoes and empathize with them- just like you would for a user. Always ask questions and find out their values and pain points for the project.

Go Above and Beyond

After understanding the baseline requirements, always seek to exceed expectations. Think about how you can future-proof your design when new features get introduced to yours. Try to identify, prioritize and resolve your main project. But if time permits, optimize other experiences along the process.
